Overview

Take in the beautiful sea views of Morecambe Bay and the Silverdale Coast, visible from both the Towpath Trail and the seafront on this flat and enlivening loop!

Step 1

Arriving by bus;

Stagecoach’s 555 leaves Kendal every hour and takes just over an hour to get to Bolton-le-Sands. From Lancaster its a shorter journey, on either the 555 or 55. See Stagecoach website to plan your journey.

Arriving by bike;

The first part of this walk is accessible by bike, along the Towpath Trail, where the towpath is surfaced. However its not possible to cycle along the pebbled beach section. Check out the ‘Cycle It’ page for alternative routes.

Arriving by car;

Limited parking is available on Main Road near the Church (what three words ///kind.upstarts.headboard) in Bolton-le-Sands. 

Step 2

Walk down St Michaels Lane passing St Michaels Cottage, taking care crossing over the bridge before joining the Towpath Trail on your left.  

Step 3

Once you’re on the Towpath turn right, away from the bridge you’ve just crossed. Continue on the excellent Towpath for approximately 2km admiring the amazing Canalside gardens and sea views

Step 4

Leave the Towpath at the sign for Hest Bank Leisure moorings – taking the path to the right which leads to the pavement. 

Step 5

Stop at The Hest Bank pub over the bridge to your left and/or continue down the pavement taking your first right onto Station Road.  

Step 6

Continue to the end of Station Road, stopping for a coffee at the independent Bold Coffee Shop on your left.  

Step 7

Cross the Coastal Road at the pedestrian crossing. 

Step 8

Continue towards the seafront by carefully crossing the level crossing at the Micro Pub. 

Step 9

Turn right past The Shore Cafe either via the road or the pebble beach. 

Step 10

Continue along the beach towards the headland for approximately 1.8km walking around the headland and visiting the praying hands shell sculpture on the edge of Red Bank Farm campsite.  

Step 11

Continue past the campsite – stopping for more refreshments at Archers Cafe if needed! 

Step 12

Join the path adjacent to the car park along ‘The Shore’ for approximately 500 metres. 

Step 13

Turn right off the path (at the bin and passing place) to re-join St Michaels Lane and continue up the hill passing Beachcomber Cottage and Sandside Caravan Park on your left.  

Step 14

Take care crossing at the rail crossing and continue weaving through the residential area until you meet the main road to cross at the pedestrian crossing. 

Step 15

After crossing turn right and immediately left up St Michaels Lane, passing the row of cottages on St Michael’s Grove. 

Step 16

Walk up and over the canal bridge back to your starting point.
