Overview

This walk features a short section of the Towpath Trail, the historic village of Burton-in-Kendal and beautiful crags and woodland. The M6 is close for the first section so bring your headphones to create your own ambience as you amble!

Step 1

Arriving by bus;

Jump off the 555 at the Dalton Lane bus stop and take the next right following the signs to Yealand. Continue on this road until you cross the M6 and reach the canal bridge to enter the Towpath Trail on your left near Cinderbarrow Miniature Railway.

Arriving by Car;

Follow sat nav directions to Cinderbarrow Miniature Railway park to park in the layby next to the canal bridge (what three words ///dispensed.shams.hothouse)

Cross the road to access the Towpath Trail, then turn left to go under the bridge.

Arriving by bike;

This walk is not suitable for cycling and there is limited bike parking in the village to enable you to secure your bike, see our ‘Cycle It’ page for alternative bike routes.

Step 2

Follow the Towpath Trail for approximately 1.3k before taking the first left-hand path with wide steps down towards Station Lane.

Step 3

Turn right on Station Lane passing through the tunnel.

Step 4

Continue to cross the M6 and enter the village of Burton-in-Kendal. Turn left onto Tanpits Lane at the black and white signpost.

Step 5

Take care crossing the main road and continue straight onto to Vicarage Lane for 200 metres.

Step 6

Turn left onto the signposted Bridleway, take note of the surrounding fells thanks to the handy interpretation board.

Follow the bridleway for approximately 1k (mud warning – it can be very muddy if it has rained recently!).

Step 7

Continue at the path crossroads and take the next right via the farm gate into the growing woodland.

Step 8

Continue on this path with the growing trees on your left.

Step 9

When you reach the gate, go through it into a field and then take the immediate left through another gate to re-enter the woodland.

Step 10

When you meet the main path turn right, passing beautiful trees and rocks and continue until you reach the Wildlife Trust signs.

Step 11

Go through the Wildlife Trust gate and then turn right through the gate immediately on your right.

Step 12

Walk along the rocky path, passing beautiful stones, until houses appear on your right.

Step 13

Continue past the houses until a small junction where a rocky path leads upwards (towards Hutton Roof Crags) and a smaller path to the right takes you towards a road. Take the right hand path through the woodland to the quiet lane.

Step 14

Cross onto the lane and turn right. After approximately 40 metres, you will see a footpath sign as an alternative to walking along the road. Turn left here into the woodland.

Step 15

Follow the path through the woodland until it ends at the entrance to a cottage and turns into a lane passing Woodside Cottages on your left.

Step 16

When you reach the main road turn right onto Dalton Lane, back towards Burton-In-Kendal. Take care walking on this quiet road for approximately 1.3k, passing Dalton Hall Business Centre on your right.

Step 17

At the end of Dalton Lane you will reach the A6070, the main road through Burton-in-Kendal.

To return by bus the bus stop will be directly in front of you.

To return to the starting point there are two options. Option 1 is slightly longer than option 2.

Step 18

Return Option 1;

Turn right to access the pubs and shop in Burton-in-Kendal and return to your starting point by turning left onto Tanpits Lane at the north of the village after the school. Return to the Towpath Trail by crossing over the M6 and walking under the railway tunnel to re-enter the Towpath Trail on your left. Leave the Towpath Trail after passing under Bridge no 142 to return to the starting point.

Step 19
