Overview

Enjoy this surfaced section of the Towpath Trail, which is wheelchair friendly, and explore Carnforth Town Centre with its independent shops and cafes and the infamous Brief Encounter Heritage Centre at the railway station.

Step 1

Arriving by bike;

  • The Towpath Trail section of this walk is also suitable for mountain or hybrid bikes as the Towpath surface is smooth. Alternatively, utilise the bike lockers and racks at Carnforth Station in the southern corner of the car park and pick up the walking route from there.

Arriving by bus;

  • Stagecoach’s 555 and 755 run regularly from Kendal to Carnforth  
  • Stagecoach’s 49 and 55 run from Lancaster to Carnforth 

Arriving by train; 

  • Regular trains from Kendal (via Oxenholme) can take your directly to the Heritage Centre at Carnforth railway station 
  • Trains also run regularly from Lancaster to Carnforth, taking just ten minutes.  

If arriving via train, bike or bus to enjoy this route, pick up the trail from the most convenient place for you and/or continue along the Towpath Trail towards Bolton-Le-Sands to catch a bus back from there.  

Arriving by car;

  • Park in the large layby on Lancaster Road (what three words ///headset.valued.attention) to the south of Carnforth and on the edge of Bolton-Le-Sands.  

Step 2

From the layby parking area, join the Towpath by following the path towards the canal bridge, walk under Bridge 126 towards Carnforth. 

Step 3

Continue on the Towpath Trail for approximately 1.7km.

Passing the Canal Turn Pub on your left.  

Step 4

At the play area and Bridge 128 leave the Towpath Trail and follow the signage up the small hill towards Kellet Road.

Step 5

Turn left, following the Town Centre signage. 

Step 6

Cross carefully at North Road junction, then continue past the terrace houses. 

Step 7

Cross at the Town Centre pedestrian crossing to continue onto Market Street.

Step 8

Explore the shops on Market Street – we recommend Edelweiss Cafe for a pit stop if needed! 

Step 9

Walk towards the Railway Station and Heritage centre at the end of Market Street. 

Step 10

Explore the gift shop and gallery before walking under the tunnel to discover the Heritage Centre and Bistro on the other side of the train tracks. 

Step 11

Return to the station entrance and exit towards the Royal Station Hotel. 

Step 12

Turn right onto Haws Hill. 

Step 13

Continue upwards past the terraces until you reach a T junction with the library in front of you.  

Step 14

Cross the road carefully here. 

Step 15

Pass the library on your left and continue down the hill taking care crossing Alexandra Road. 

Step 16

Continue for approximately 100 metres past the Tesco entrance opposite. 

Step 17

Turn left at The Canal Turn car park entrance to re-join the Towpath Trail. 

Step 18

Turn right onto the Towpath Trail to return to your car and/or to continue further and catch the bus back from Bolton-le-Sands.
